It was announced yesterday the
Photoshelter Collection is Closing. Photoshelter had a simple idea, give all photographers the chance to get paid a reasonable rate for the right to reproduce their work. Unlike most stock agencies the split on sales was 70/30 in favour of the photographer (with most you're doing well if you make 50/50).
Unfortunately although the buyers liked the imagery they had access to through the Photoshelter Collection, most were locked into subscriptions with the bigger players (such as Getty, Alamy, Corbis) which meant they just couldn't justify buying images anywhere else. On top of that PSC had financial backers that were looking for much faster growth than PSC could make.
On the plus side, closing down the collection means they're free to concentrate more resources on their
archiving business thereby safeguarding the images of thousands of photographers.
There's been a lot of negative feeling on the boards over at PSC but personally I'm just sad to see a brave idea fall by the wayside. Good luck guys and to all the folks on the forums, I'll see you over at
the stock imaging forum
